What are Dentures?
Dentures are dental devices made to restore missing teeth, supporting individuals in maintaining the contour of their face, proper function when eating, and clear speech. They may be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or a complete set of teeth.
Restoring lost teeth can support your oral wellbeing. If you have partly or fully missing teeth, dentures may be a practical solution to help restore your dental function.
Types of Dentures
Depending on whether you are missing one tooth, several teeth, or all teeth, your dental team can assist you in choosing the type of denture that fits your treatment needs.
- Full Dentures
If you are missing all of your natural teeth, your dental provider may recommend a complete set of full dentures.
Full dentures can be crafted for either the upper or lower arch, or both. These types of dentures stay in place using natural suction of the gums, which may also be supplemented using denture adhesives if needed.
Complete dentures are made to be removable for easy cleaning and comfortable resting at night.
- Partial Dentures
If you are missing several—but not all—teeth, partial dentures may be an optional treatment. Partial dentures can be beneficial for patients seeking removable tooth replacements, particularly if the teeth on either side of the gap cannot support a dental bridge.
Partial dentures consist of one or more customized replacement teeth, held in place by attaching to natural nearby teeth.
They are designed to be removed for regular cleaning as well as when you sleep.
- Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures are crafted to feel comfortable, offering stabilization using dental implants for a secure placement in the mouth. With support from implants, they are a durable option enabling efficient biting and chewing ability.
Some varieties of implant-supported dentures cannot be removed at home and should only be removed by your dental professional.
Why Dentures May Be Used
When many or all teeth are lost, it is possible for the muscles of the face to lose some support, which may alter your facial appearance. Dentures are developed to provide structural support, helping preserve facial features and a natural appearance.
Replacing spaces left by missing teeth can help maintain your ongoing oral health. With prosthetic restorations like dentures, your dentist may support you in limiting the movement of remaining teeth. Proper replacement can make it easier to chew foods and articulate speech naturally.
